White Rhino in Morning Light

Rhino has always been one of my favorite photographic subjects.

It’s not always easy, as most of the time they have their heads flat on the floor, but therein lies the challenge.  A wonderful combination of straight line curves and texture makes for a very ‘large’ variety of composition options.

Early morning light made photographing this rhino a great experience.  With light coming from behind your subject any dust that they kick up will be visible in your images.  This male was walking along a burnt area, feeding off the fresh grass shoots, all the time kicking up some dust and ash.  Great play of light with some amazing photo opportunities.  As we all know, photography means painting with light and this scene epitomized that definition.

In this almost mystical light the plight of rhino in Africa came up.

If anything, wildlife photography is helping us to create compelling images of these amazing animals.  We are creating a record.  A memory.

How it it that some people just do not seem to see the beauty of these animals?  Do they not see that if things keep going the way they are that photographs are all we are going to have left?

Sad, sad thing.
