Yesterday I Saw a Leopard

Yesterday I saw a leopard.

It was a beautiful leopard, relaxed, sitting on a log not too far from us.  I did not manage to get a picture.  Actually, I did not even reach for my camera.

In wildlife photography the initial urge of photographing everything that moves eventually gives way to a more measured approach.  You tend to look more.  Think more.  Basically appreciate the moment as either a beautiful scene or a possible photographic opportunity.  They are not the same.

In the African bush, beautiful scene present themselves around every corner.  If you are open to them, they pretty much hit you in the face all the time.  You cannot miss them.  On the other hand, possible photographic opportunities are a bit more subtle.   You need to learn to notice them.  The subtle play of light.  The background.  General composition.

There are many occasions when beautiful scenes translates perfectly into photographic opportunities but those are the images everybody will get.  You need to look deeper into a scene and find the many possible photographic opportunities hidden among the obvious.

Just because you are faced with a beautiful scene or subject does not mean you have to rip through 8 frames a second.  Look, appreciate and choose your shots from there.

Yesterday I saw a leopard but ended up photographing an elephant instead.

I agree Gerry. Sometimes we just want to get the shot without actually appreciating the wonder in front of us. I often remind myslef not to look at Nature just through a viewfinder. Great Elly Pic. Albie
