The last week has been very cold and wet and photographic opportunities was few and far between.
It has literally been raining for the whole week and during the times we were not getting soaked on the vehicle we were sitting in the lodge having red wine. Not a bad thing but, most of the time, it does not lead to great wildlife opportunities.
The elephant on the right was one of the few very subjects we had to work with which was not all bad as the overcast conditions works wonders on the rough skin. This old boy came walking down the road straight at us with absolutely no intention of changing course so after a few shots we made space for him. After a few quick images we gave him right of way and started heading back to the lodge.
The one upside of all the wet weather, and less time spent out in the field, was that it gave me a lot of time to do admin and office work. Got a lot done but still a long way to go. Unfortunately it is a necessary evil that you need to pay attention to from time to time in order for things to move in the right direction. What is the point if you just keep on taking pictures but they just sit on your hard drive or having a skill that you don’t use and are not sharing it with people? That’s all changing. All in all a pretty productive, all be it non photographic, week and I need another 10 days like that to get everything done. Step by step…
Now as you know I normally do blog posts from Monday through Friday. Tomorrow I will be test driving a new Saturday post which will feature wildlife images from the Madikwe Game Reserve from guides, lodge managers and even guests. The idea with this weekly weekend post is to showcase not only wildlife photography but also the various lodges and keen photographers in the Madikwe Game Reserve.
These posts will not feature any writing or any of my photographic ramblings and is purely intended to showcase African wildlife photography. You will see that below each images there will be links to the photographers site, if they have one, and a link to the lodge out of which the image was taken.
Other than that the Photo-Africa Workshops & Photographic Safari mini site is coming along nicely. The bookings for the first two workshops are open, and you can book directly from the site, but there is still a huge amount of things I need to finalize on the site. Will keep you posted as soon as everything is good to go.
Another thing I am quite excited about is that from 10 May a few photographer friends will be coming to visit me in Madikwe. You see, I have a few days open before I go on leave next Wednesday so what better than to go out and get photographically carried away with some great wildlife photographers. Looking forward to a few days in the bush where I can focus completely on my own photography and share ideas. More on this towards the end of next week.
So with all of that I say goodbye until Monday! Make sure to check out the Madikwe wildlife post tomorrow.
Have a good one!

Hi Gerry
Great post…..once again and looking forward to Saturday’s post
Gerry,
You mentioned that the day was rainy. Question for you: Let’s say you are traveling to Africa for 10 days with the sole purpose of shooting photography and it rains almost everyday. Do you have any advice for these travelers who only have the opportunity to shoot their subjects in the rain? How can these travelers prepare for rainy days and how can they make their photographs the best they can be with the rain? Thanks!
