In wildlife photography can either aim to shoot documentary type images or lean more towards the fine art side of things.
And then you get shots like this…

Yeah, this morning on our coffee stop we were joined by three young lions. After stopping in an open clearing for some coffee after a great morning out in the bush, we saw the three young lions walking down the road towards us. We spotted them from about 200 meters, that’s why you stop in an open clearing, which gave everybody enough time to get back on the vehicle. Not wanting to take any chances I also got in the vehicle and proceeded to watch as the three young cats came closer. Initially the table cloth blowing in the wind had them very confused as they circled our makeshift coffee shop but the one female took a ‘liking’ to out hot box and had a few growls at it before trying to give it a smack and ultimately a nibble as well.
After about 5 minutes she lost interest and they all got back on the road and kept going like nothing was wrong. Was great fun but remember… keep your eyes open. Anything can happen on safari!
The rest of the morning was quite calm and we were able to do quite a bit of nice bird photography. This Lilac Breasted Roller went about his morning yoga routine as we snapped away.

All in all a great morning out in Africa with other photo subjects including Wild Dog and Zebra. Gotta love it when things just work.
On a different note, I think Facebook and Twitter is fantastic with regards to sharing your work and keeping in touch with old friends. The Farmville and Mafia War invitation can drive you bonkers somedays, and no I am not interested so please don’t keep on sending me invitations, but overall the whole social networking phenomena is great for both personal and business reasons. The reason I mention this is that tomorrow’s guest blogger is a photographer I met on Facebook. Initially I thought he had some quite nice images but, and this is the important part, he keep son producing amazing landscapes and seascapes on a regular basis. When I first approached Marius Potgieter to do a guest post on Photo-Africa he was quite surprised that someone wanted to showcase his images and hear his thoughts about them. Make sure to join Marius tomorrow for ‘The Wrestlings of an Amateur Photographer’ in which he shares his thoughts on his landscape and seascape images which are most definitely worth sharing with as many people as possible!
Have a good one! WIll be back on Friday.
Gerry

Gorgeous photos (should I say “as always?” I should). I would be envious but you’re out there sharing great moments like this with poor schlubs like us at our desks.
Hey Gerrie – grand sequence. I notice the absence of Homo-sapiens
thats awesome man, always wanted that to happen to me, but never got that lucky!!!
Yeah… all the Homo sapiens disappeared out of sight very quickly!
Was good fun! Had e few ellies stop by a few times but nothing like this!
Great capture. Where was Mom? … and did a few folks need a pee break after this and before coffee?
I guess it is true – “everything comes to he who waits”! Great shots (the only way to “shoot” lions). I agree about the Facebook games. I’d like to find out how to get off of. Farmville!
