Shooting Toads

After more than 100mm of rain, there are puddles everywhere in Madikwe. This afternoon we had a great gamed drive where we saw two male lions on a kill, white rhino and a lot of elephants.  Yeah, we got a lot of great shots but my favorite images of the afternoon was of toads.  With puddles all over the place the toads and frogs are having an absolute ball. We stopped at a seasonal watering hole and had a great time photographing the little amphibians.

Guttural Toad

This Guttural Toad was sitting perfectly still on a log on the water.  He definitely had one of the better spots as the rest were kinda cramped.

The photographic opportunities were endless.  There must have been a thousand frogs around the little watering hole, all clumped together on the various pieces of wood and logs in the water.  With toads and frogs the males normally all congregate around water and call for females.  (If you have ever been to the bush in the rainy season you will now the racket these little guys can make.)  When the female arrives it can turns into a free for all so as you can imagine, things can get quite crowded!

Was great to get a chance to photograph the smaller things and I am sure that we must have looked quite strange, as some of the pictures showed,  as we crawled around to try and get to the amphibian’s eye level.  Still great fun though.

When you are out in the field remember to look for the small things.  And then try and get to their eye level! :)

More soon.
